Women interested in trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) may need assistance making decisions about birth options. One approach is shared decision making (SDM), in which clinicians share best available evidence and patients are supported to consider their values and beliefs. A SDM program for vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) was implemented combining individual counseling, an educational video, a frequently asked questions document, and an online decision aid. Aims were to evaluate: (1) the extent to which each phase of the program was effective preparing women to make a decision about TOLAC; (2) if participants spoke with healthcare providers about birth options; (3) if women were able to make a decision about TOLAC; (4) and if women regretted the decision they made. Results from this small sample suggested the program was effective in assisting women to make a decision about TOLAC and to talk to their health care provider about birth options.
